ABOUT BOWENWORK

What is Bowenwork ?

Bowenwork uses the application of gentle pressure to specific areas of in certain muscles and muscle groups. These gentle, yet powerful moves, send a neurologic impulse to the muscles and to the brain which trigger the autonomic nervous system to rebalance and reset. The signals must be done in a particular order, and after each set of moves, the body is left to rest and "absorb" the message for a short time.

Where Did Bowen Originate?

The original Bowen Technique originated in Australia by the late Mr. Thomas Bowen in the 1950s. It is currently being taught and practiced throughout the world. In 1974 according to a survey of alternative health practitioners performed by the Victorian Government, Bowen was found to be doing over 13,000 treatments per year. In over 85% of his cases, the problems for which his patients sought treatment were resolved completely.

What Can It Do For Me?

In a strictly medical sense, Bowenwork doesn't cure anything. The body is stimulated to engage its own self-balancing mechanisms. During the treatment the series of relaxing moves and pauses work in the specific area until all unnatural tension is gone. Once tension is relieved, the bodies self-regulating systems return to their peak functioning state.

The Bowenwork works directly on the muscular system, so of course it is wonderful for injuries of all sorts and for chronic pain. It has been found to often help with: Migraines, Carpal Tunnel, Knee Pain, Tennis Elbow, TMJ, Sciatic Pain, Neck, Shoulder Pain, Stiffness and Restrictions, Frozen Shoulder, Digestive Problems, Stress, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Fluid Retention, Plantar Fasciitis, Bedwetting and Depression.

Bowenwork produces rapid and lasting relief from pain and discomfort, it can safely be used on everyone from small infants to the frail and the elderly.

Bowenwork sessions are done through the clothing and last about an hour.   For best results, schedule two treatments 5-7 days apart.

Post-Bowenwork Recommendations

Stand up

  • Do not remain seated for more than half an hour at a time at home, work or in the car.  Get up and take a few steps.

Walk

  • Walking also helps stimulate the blood and the lymphatic circulation. Walking helps the body detoxify.  This is particularly important for clients suffering from lower back pain.

Drink Water

  • Drink more water for several days following each treatment

Stand Evenly on Both Feet

  • When getting out of bed, chair or car seat, take your weight evenly on both feet versus one foot at a time when you stand.  This helps to maintain the balancing effect the treatment has on the body.

Stick to Mild Temperatures

  • Do not apply ice or heat on the days following a treatment session

Take It Easy

  • Avoid heavy physical exertion for a few days.

Wait

  • Wait at least 5 days before receiving any other type of bodywork treatment.  Each Bowen treatment may take up to ten days to complete its action
